Kansas City, Kansas Public Library (KCKPL) serves Wyandotte County, a community in Northeastern Kansas with a population of around 170,000, with five library branches and three mobile libraries. KCKPL was formed in 1893 and came under the authority of the Kansas City, Kansas Public School District Board of Education in 1899, where it remains today. The mission of Kansas City, Kansas Public Library is to connect members of a dynamic community with information, tools, resources, and welcoming spaces to enrich lives in Wyandotte County. 

Job Goal: 
The Technology Outreach & Access Librarian leads efforts to expand access to technology, workforce development, and digital literacy tools across the community. This position supports patrons through one-on-one assistance, enhanced programming, and collaborative outreach initiatives. The librarian also serves as a key contact for community partnerships related to job-readiness, small business resources, and equity in digital access, while supporting daily library operations and public service needs.

Essential Functions 

  • Plan and deliver services and programs that promote digital literacy, career development, and entrepreneurship. 
  • Collaborate with local agencies, schools, nonprofits, and workforce organizations to provide educational and job-readiness support. 
  • Recommend and oversee the acquisition of technology and workforce training platforms to expand community access. 
  • Lead digital inclusion efforts through programming, space development, and technology access initiatives. 
  • Develop outreach strategies focused on underrepresented communities to promote equitable access to digital and career resources. 
  • Coordinate with other departments to market programs and build strategic partnerships. 
  • Provide support for community presenters and events, including technical assistance and logistics. 
  • Engage, train, and support volunteers, especially in technology and job-assistance services. 
  • Partner with Collection Development to maintain relevant career and digital literacy resources. 
  • Provide one-on-one and group instruction on emerging technologies and creative tools. 
  • Represent the library in community networks and professional groups related to workforce development and digital inclusion. 
  • Perform all general public service duties, including circulation, patron assistance, technology troubleshooting, and orientation to library services. 
  • Serve as supervisor-in-charge in the absence of branch leadership. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications 

  • Master of Library Science (MLS) degree or equivalent education/experience mix required. 
  • Must pass a background check according to library standards. 
  • Strong understanding of public library services, digital equity, and community programming. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and clearly with patrons, staff, and community partners. 
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and community engagement. 
  • Technologically fluent and able to assist patrons in using current and emerging tools. 
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and adapt to changing needs. 
  • Experience planning, delivering, and evaluating programs or services. 
  • Must provide own transportation for outreach and off-site events. 
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
